GUIDANCE NOTES
1. An application form for an employment Licence must be completed for every pupil of compulsory school age who is considering employment.

2. No pupil under the age of 13 can be employed in any part-time work.

3. The types of employment and hours to be worked are strictly regulated. A brief summary of the main restrictions can be found below.

4. SECTION A This section must be completed by the prospective employer, and must give specific and exact details of the nature of employment and the hours to be worked. The prospective employer must sign this section to show that s/he understands this, and that any change in employment will therefore require a further application form to be submitted.

5. SECTION B This section must be completed in full by the parent or carer of the pupil considering employment.

6. SECTION C The parent or carer must complete the medical questionnaire. A medical examination may be required.

7. The completed application form should then be submitted to the Education Welfare Service, together with a copy of the pupil's birth certificate and a passport photo, at the address on the front of the application form.
SUMMARY OF RESTRICTIONS RELATING TO EMPLOYMENT
a) Prohibited employment
No child of any age may be employed;
i) in a cinema, theatre, discotheque, dance hall or night club, except in conjunction with a performance given entirely by children;
ii) to sell or deliver alcohol, except in sealed containers;
iii) to deliver milk;
iv) deliver fuel oils;
v) in a commercial kitchen;
vi) to collect or sort refuse;
vii) in any work which is more than three metres above ground level or, in the case of internal work, more than three metres above floor level;
viii) to collect money, to sell or canvas, door to door; ix) in work involving exposure to adult material or in situations which are for this reason otherwise unsuitable for children;
x) in telephone sales;
xi) in any slaughter house, abattoir or butcher's shop where meat is prepared for sale;
xii) as an attendant or assistant in a fairground or amusement arcade or in any other premises used for the purpose of public amusement by means of automatic machines, games of chance or skill or s

  • If your child works for more than 4 hours, s/he must have an hour's break.
  • If your child works during the school holidays, s/he must have a two week period free from work.
  • Your child can only work 12 hours maximum in any school week.
